Who publishes this guide
5 Hour Pre-Licensing Course is published by a small New York team that works in driver education and with several of the course providers listed here. We wrote the guide because the rules for the course are spread across a handful of DMV pages and provider sites, and a learner or a parent should not need to read all of them to find out what applies.
We are not part of the New York State DMV and we do not speak for it. The DMV sets the rules, and wherever we state one we link to the DMV page it comes from. When your situation is unusual, the DMV is the final word, not us.
Where our facts come from
Two kinds of sources feed this site. The rules about who must take the course, the formats, the MV-278 and the road test come from the DMV’s own pages, such as the pre-licensing course page and the road test preparation page. Prices, schedules, languages and certificate handling come from each provider’s public website.
We leave out what we cannot check. That means no customer reviews, no star ratings and no provider claims about how many students they have taught or how long they have operated. If a provider does not publish a detail, such as the class language or how the certificate is delivered, we say so instead of guessing.
The facts in this edition were checked in October 2026. We re-check the DMV pages and the providers’ websites every month, because prices and class dates move more often than the rules do.
How the provider list is ordered
Each provider receives an editorial score out of 10. The score reflects how well the provider does on six criteria, weighted as follows:
- Price and transparency: 25%. Is the price published, and is it clear what it includes?
- Format options: 20%. Does the provider offer a live online class, a classroom or an online self-paced course?
- Class availability: 20%. How many class dates are posted each week?
- Languages: 15%. Does the provider state that it teaches in English and Spanish?
- Booking and certificate handling: 10%. Can you book online, and does the provider explain how the MV-278 is issued and delivered?
- Extras: 10%. Does the provider help with road test booking or supply a car for the test?
The scores are our own assessment, not customer ratings, and the providers are listed from the highest score to the lowest. The result is shown in the ranking, the side-by-side table and the provider directory. Nothing in the score is a judgment of teaching quality, because we have no reliable way to measure that and do not claim to.
Partner labels and our relationships
The publisher works with four of the providers: Coreway Driving School, 5 Hour Class NYC, NY 5-Hour Course and Take 5-Hour Course. They carry a Partner label wherever they appear, and you will find the same disclosure in the footer of every page. All other providers have no relationship with us.
Partners are scored with the same six criteria as everyone else, and their top positions come from those criteria: a published flat price, a live online option, English and Spanish classes, several class dates a week, online booking and road test help. We are telling you about the relationship because it matters. Every fact in our tables can be checked on the provider’s own website, and we encourage you to do that before you pay anyone, including a Partner.
Corrections
Each page shows the month in which its facts were last checked. If a price, a date or a detail has changed since then, the provider’s own page has the final say, and we correct our pages at the next monthly check or sooner when we notice a mistake. If a DMV rule changes, we update the guide pages that depend on it first.
If you are reading this because you want to compare costs, the cost guide is a good next stop. If you want to start from the rules, begin with who needs the 5-hour course.
Disclosure:
this site is published by a team that also works with Coreway Driving School and the course booking sites 5 Hour Class NYC, NY 5-Hour Course and Take 5-Hour Course. Scores are our own editorial assessment, and the facts in every table come from the providers’ public websites, so you can check them before you pay.
No other school listed here has any arrangement with us, and none of them paid to be listed.
