5 Hour Pre-Licensing Course

5-Hour Course in Spanish in New York

You can take the 5-hour pre-licensing course in Spanish, and it counts exactly the same as the English class. What changes is the calendar: Spanish sessions run on fewer dates, so it pays to plan ahead.

The same course, taught in Spanish

A Spanish class is not a different or lighter course. It is the New York pre-licensing course delivered in another language, taught by a qualified instructor, and it leads to the same MV-278 certificate as an English class. The same eligibility rules apply, too: live classes are open from age 16, and a valid New York learner permit is needed before you start.

The DMV has one rule that helps you shop. A course taught in a language other than English must say so in its advertising. If a school teaches in Spanish, its page will tell you, and if the page does not mention a language, treat that as a question to ask. The cards above show the providers in our directory that state they teach in Spanish.

Live Spanish classes: when and how to book

Coreway runs a Spanish class on select Sundays at 3:00 PM with a bilingual instructor. Its English classes run on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:00 PM and Saturdays at 1:00 PM. The schedule shows between 5 and 12 seats per class, and the price starts at $40, with some dates listed at $50.

NY 5-Hour Course, 5 Hour Class NYC and Take 5-Hour Course post the same Spanish session on select Sundays at 3:00 PM at a flat $40 with no extra charge for the certificate. Each of the three sites has a full Spanish version, so you can read the page and reserve a seat in Spanish. The booking form is short, with your name and phone number, and the site follows up to confirm the details.

New York Auto School teaches live on Zoom in English and in Spanish, on weekdays and weekends, and mails the certificate to the address on your permit the next business day. It charges $65, and it does not list specific days and times on the pages we reviewed, so ask for the next Spanish date.

Because the Sunday Spanish classes are limited, the practical advice is to look at the upcoming dates as soon as you have your permit, pick the earliest that works and keep a second date in mind in case plans change. Coreway allows free rescheduling with at least 24 hours’ notice, which is worth knowing if you must move a seat.

Spanish online, for ages 18 and up

If a Sunday class does not fit, there are online options in both languages. Pre-Licensing Course LLC, based in Astoria, lists its automated course at a $38 offer price (regular $49), and NTSI, with a base in Staten Island, lists it at $44.95. Both are on the DMV’s list of online providers and both offer English and Spanish.

The DMV’s rules for the online format still apply. You must be 18 or older with a valid New York photo learner permit, junior permit holders are not eligible, and you have 30 days from registration to finish. There is no paper certificate; the provider reports your completion to the DMV, usually within 24 to 48 hours. Our page on Zoom, classroom and online formats explains the trade-offs.

Providers that do not state a language

Many New York schools say nothing about the language of the class. Drive Rite Academy NY, Image Driving School, Grand Prix Driving School, Deshi Driving School and Bronx Driving School do not state one on the pages we reviewed. Alyaa Driving School says its driving lessons are taught in English, Arabic and Spanish, but it does not state the language of the 5-hour class.

That does not mean these schools cannot teach in Spanish. It means you should ask before you pay. A short message to the school, saying you want a Spanish-language class and asking for the next date, settles it. If the answer is unclear, one of the providers above that states Spanish is the safer choice.

Tips for Spanish-speaking learners and families

  • Keep the official terms in English. Schools and the DMV use words such as learner permit, road test and MV-278, so it helps to recognize them as they are written.
  • Have your documents ready. At Coreway, for example, you need a plastic New York photo learner permit, or a paper permit with a New York State photo ID, and the permit is checked on camera.
  • Plan for the whole class. The course is about five hours, and schools expect you to stay for all of it.
  • Book road test help early if you want it. Some providers offer it, and the details are on our road test page.

Parents can help with the booking, but the learner is the one who attends the class and shows the permit. This site is also published in Spanish, and the language link at the top of any page switches the whole guide.

After a Spanish class

The steps after the class are the same as for any other learner. The school issues the MV-278 for live classes, and you need it to book the road test. The certificate is valid for one year, you bring the original on test day, and a replacement comes from the school that issued it. These points are covered in detail on the MV-278 page.

If you are not sure the course applies to you at all, check who needs the 5-hour course first, since some drivers are exempt.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Spanish 5-hour course the same as the English one?

Yes. It is the same course and leads to the same MV-278 certificate when you take a live class. The only difference is the language of instruction and, in most cases, the schedule.

When are the Spanish classes?

Coreway, NY 5-Hour Course, 5 Hour Class NYC and Take 5-Hour Course hold a Spanish class on select Sundays at 3:00 PM. New York Auto School teaches in English and Spanish on weekdays and weekends but does not list specific days on the pages we reviewed. Check the schedule on each site for the current dates.

Can I take the course in Spanish online?

Yes, if you are 18 or older with a valid New York photo learner permit. Pre-Licensing Course LLC and NTSI both offer their automated courses in English and Spanish. You will not receive a paper MV-278; the provider reports your completion to the DMV.

How do I know a school really teaches in Spanish?

The DMV requires courses taught in a language other than English to say so, so look for that statement on the school’s page. If the page does not mention the language of the class, ask the school directly before you pay.

What if no Spanish date fits my schedule?

You have three choices: wait for the next Spanish date, take the online course in Spanish if you are 18 or older, or ask a school such as New York Auto School for its next Spanish class. Look at the schedule early, since Spanish sessions run on fewer dates.
