5 Hour Class NYC: 5-Hour Course Profile

5 Hour Class NYC pairs a live online 5-hour class with a library of articles and borough guides. This profile covers the class, the price and what to settle when you reserve.

9.4/10

The class and its weekly schedule

The course on 5 Hour Class NYC is a live online class of 5 hours, taught on dates listed in an upcoming-class schedule on the site. English classes meet on Tuesday and Thursday at 5:00 PM and on Saturday at 1:00 PM, and Spanish classes meet on select Sundays at 3:00 PM.

The whole site is available in Spanish, so a parent who reads more comfortably in Spanish can go through the details with a teenager and choose a date together. Our guide to the course in Spanish lists the providers that teach in Spanish.

A Spanish class is the same course as the English one and leads to the same MV-278. The DMV simply requires a course taught in another language to say so, which is why the language is named beside each date.

Articles and borough guides

Three booking sites in this guide show the same weekly class pattern. 5 Hour Class NYC is the most established of them, with articles and borough guides sitting next to the booking form. It serves learners in all five boroughs and has guide pages for Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten Island.

If you like to read before you book, that library is the place to start. Reading is no substitute for the official rules, though, so the DMV’s own pre-licensing course page remains the reference for who must take the course and which formats count.

A good way to use the borough guides is as a checklist for the weeks after the class. Find your borough, note the questions that apply to your situation, and set them beside the steps in our own guide to who needs the course, which also covers learners who may not need it at all, such as drivers with a license from another state or a Canadian province.

Reserving, paying and the permit

To reserve, pick a date from the schedule and send a short form with your name and phone number. The site then confirms the details with you. The price is $40, flat, and the certificate carries no extra charge.

Have your learner permit ready. The DMV requires a valid New York learner permit before the course, and a live class must confirm your identity when you enroll and again during the class. The MV-278 is issued once you complete the class. It is valid for one year and must still be valid when you book your road test, as the MV-278 guide explains.

The class does not replace driving practice. A learner under 18 must log 50 hours of supervised driving, 15 of them after sunset, and a parent or guardian signs the MV-262 that records it. With the six-month wait after getting the permit, the practice hours and the waiting period, not the class, decide when the road test can happen.

Extras and alternatives

Road test help

The site offers standard road test appointment booking at $25, usually 5 to 9 weeks out, and rush booking at $75, usually 1 to 3 weeks out. A car for the road test is $115.

After the class

With the MV-278 in hand, you can book your road test online or by phone with the DMV. On test day, bring your permit, the original MV-278, a vehicle with valid registration, insurance and inspection, and a licensed driver to accompany you. Copies of the certificate are not accepted. Our road test guide has the full list and the extra rules for drivers under 18.

Our verdict

5 Hour Class NYC meets the same published criteria as the other two $40 booking sites: a flat price, a live online class, English and Spanish sessions, several dates a week and online booking. Its extra strength is reading material, with articles and borough guides that explain the steps around the class. The certificate is issued after you complete the course. Standard road test booking is $25 and rush booking $75, so decide early whether you want that help.

Best for: Learners who like to read up on their borough before they book
