What a Coreway class is like
Coreway teaches the 5-hour course as a live class on Zoom, led by a live instructor rather than a pre-recorded video. That is the format the DMV describes for a virtual classroom: live, real-time teaching by a qualified instructor, with your identity confirmed when you enroll and again during the course. At Coreway, your learner permit is checked on camera.
Groups are small. The schedule on Coreway’s page shows between 5 and 12 seats per class. You attend the whole class, and there are no quizzes and no final exam, so your job is to show up and stay for the full 5 hours.
The class is open from age 16, and that includes holders of junior permits (class DJ or MJ). On the day, have a plastic New York photo learner permit in hand, or a paper permit together with a New York State photo ID.
Dates, language and price
English classes run on Tuesday and Thursday at 5:00 PM and on Saturday at 1:00 PM. Spanish classes are held on select Sundays at 3:00 PM with a bilingual instructor, so check which Sundays are on the calendar before you plan. Our guide to the 5-hour course in Spanish explains what a Spanish class involves and who offers one.
Coreway’s headline price is from $40, and some dates on the schedule are listed at $50, so read the price beside the date you choose. Card payments carry a 2.9% processing fee; Klarna and Afterpay are also accepted. Because classes run on fixed dates, you book a seat ahead. If your plans change, rescheduling is free with at least 24 hours’ notice. Our cost guide puts these numbers next to other providers.
From class to MV-278 in hand
Coreway issues the MV-278 on the next business day after the class. You then choose how it reaches you:
- By mail. It is sent through USPS, taking 1 to 2 weeks with standard delivery, or 2 days or overnight if you add expedited delivery at checkout.
- In person. You can pick it up at 590B New York Avenue in Brooklyn.
A digital confirmation also arrives the same day. It is a handy record, but the DMV asks for the original paper certificate at the road test and does not accept copies. The MV-278 stays valid for one year and must still be valid when you book the test; our MV-278 guide covers the details. If you lose the certificate while the original is still valid, Coreway charges $25 for a duplicate.
Offices, extras and where it fits
Coreway has two offices in Brooklyn, at 26 Court Street, Suite 614, and at 590B New York Avenue. Office staff also speak Russian, Ukrainian and Turkish, which can help when a parent is handling the paperwork.
Road test help is sold separately: appointment booking at $20 standard or $70 rush, and a car for the road test at $110. Packages combine the class, an appointment, the car and 1, 3, 5 or 8 lessons of 45 minutes, priced at $230, $332, $437 and $585. The DMV lets you book a road test yourself online or by phone, so think of these as conveniences, and read our road test guide first.
Coreway leads our list on the criteria explained on the About page: a posted price, a live online class, English and Spanish classes, several dates each week and road test help. If you would like a flat $40 and a plain online booking form, look at NY 5-Hour Course. If you prefer a classroom, Image Driving School lists one in Brooklyn.
What we like
- Live Zoom class, ages 16+ including junior permits
- Schedule shows 5 to 12 seats per class
- MV-278 issued the next business day, with same-day digital confirmation
- Road test booking from $20 and a car for the test at $110
Keep in mind
- Classes run on fixed dates, so you book a seat ahead
- Some dates are listed at $50 rather than $40, and card payments add a 2.9% fee
- The Spanish class runs on select Sundays only
Our verdict
Coreway leads our ranking because it meets most of our published criteria at once: a stated starting price, a live online class, English and Spanish sessions, several class dates a week and road test help. The $40 starting price does not apply to every date, so check the price on the date you choose before paying. The paper MV-278 is issued the next business day and can be mailed or collected at the Brooklyn office, which suits families who would rather hold it in person. Free rescheduling with 24 hours’ notice takes some of the risk out of booking a seat.
Best for: Learners who want a live Zoom class and Brooklyn offices for the paper certificate
