A borough-by-borough way in
The first thing to notice about nyfivehourcourse.com is how it is organized. There is a page for each borough (Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten Island) and a set of articles, and the emphasis throughout is clear guidance, borough by borough.
The class itself does not change with your address. It is a live online class of 5 hours, held on scheduled dates, and the site serves learners in all five boroughs. English classes run on Tuesday and Thursday at 5:00 PM and on Saturday at 1:00 PM. Spanish classes run on select Sundays at 3:00 PM, and the site has a full Spanish version.
The DMV sets the ground rules for any live class, and they apply here as they do everywhere. You need a valid New York learner permit before you start, the minimum age for a live class is 16, and the school must confirm your identity when you enroll and again during the course. A live class ends with the paper MV-278. The DMV’s course page sets all of this out.
If you are not yet sure the course applies to you, begin with our page on who needs the 5-hour course.
Reserving a seat, step by step
- Open the upcoming class schedule on the site and choose a date: Tuesday or Thursday at 5:00 PM, Saturday at 1:00 PM, or a select Sunday at 3:00 PM for the Spanish class.
- Fill in the short reservation form. It asks for your name and your phone number.
- Wait for the site to confirm the details of your reservation with you.
- Join the live class on the day. It runs for 5 hours.
Classes run on fixed dates, so a missed class means waiting for the next one. Reserve early enough that you can fit your chosen date around school or work.
Price and the certificate
The price is a flat $40, with no extra charge for the certificate. The MV-278 is issued after you complete the class.
Two DMV rules make it worth asking about delivery when the site confirms your reservation. The certificate must be valid on the day you book your road test, and the original, not a copy, goes with you to the test. Our MV-278 guide explains both, and our cost guide shows where $40 sits among other providers.
Once you hold the certificate, the next step is the road test. You book it through the DMV scheduler online or by phone at 1-518-402-2100, and the earliest openings are usually 3 to 5 weeks away, sometimes up to 10 in busy periods. Learners under 18 must also wait six months after receiving the permit and bring the MV-262, which records 50 hours of supervised driving, 15 of them after sunset. After a failed test, the wait before the next attempt is at least 14 days.
Road test help and how it compares
The site also helps with the next step. Standard road test appointment booking costs $25 and is usually 5 to 9 weeks out; rush booking costs $75 and is usually 1 to 3 weeks out; a car for the road test costs $115. You can also book directly with the DMV, which describes the process on its road test preparation page.
NY 5-Hour Course is one of our four Partner providers, and the About page explains what that means. It shows the same weekly pattern and the same $40 price as 5 Hour Class NYC, so choosing between the two comes down to which site’s guidance you prefer. If you would rather register at an office in person, Coreway has two in Brooklyn.
What we like
- $40 flat, with no extra charge for the certificate
- Posted dates: Tuesday and Thursday 5 PM, Saturday 1 PM
- Spanish class on select Sundays at 3 PM
- Separate pages for Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten Island
Keep in mind
- Classes run on fixed dates rather than on demand
- The Spanish class is offered on select Sundays only
- Road test booking ($25 or $75) and the car ($115) cost extra
Our verdict
NY 5-Hour Course scores near the top on the criteria we publish: a flat price, a live online class, English and Spanish sessions, several dates a week and online seat booking. Its borough pages make it easy to see what applies where you live. The MV-278 is issued after you complete the class, and road test booking help and a car for the test are available as add-ons. Choose a date, keep your permit ready for the identity check, and confirm how the certificate will reach you when the site follows up.
Best for: Learners who want a flat $40 price and plain guidance for their own borough
