Take 5-Hour Course: Live Class Profile

Take 5-Hour Course is built around one idea: choose the nearest class date that fits your week and reserve a seat. This profile looks at how that works and why the class date is only one part of the timeline.

9.3/10

Start with the nearest date

On take5hourcourse.com the path is short. You look at the schedule, pick the date closest to today that you can attend, and reserve a seat with a short form that asks for your name and phone number. The site then confirms the details with you.

Each week has three English classes: Tuesday and Thursday at 5:00 PM, and Saturday at 1:00 PM. Spanish classes run on select Sundays at 3:00 PM, and the site has a full Spanish version. The class is live, online and 5 hours long every time, so getting it done sooner means choosing an early date, never a shorter class.

Picking a slot you can protect

Because classes run on fixed dates, a missed class means waiting for the next one. Choose the slot your week can really spare, and do the arithmetic on the end time:

  • A 5:00 PM start on Tuesday or Thursday finishes around 10:00 PM, which matters on a school night.
  • A 1:00 PM start on Saturday finishes around 6:00 PM, leaving the morning free.
  • A 3:00 PM start on a Spanish Sunday finishes around 8:00 PM.

A slot you can hold from start to finish is worth more than an early date you may have to give up.

The road test wait is the long part

The class takes one sitting; the road test usually takes weeks. The DMV says the earliest road test slots are usually 3 to 5 weeks away, and up to 10 weeks in busy periods, and the MV-278 must be valid when you book. That is the practical reason to finish the class early: it lets you start booking.

The MV-278 is issued after you complete the class and stays valid for one year. The price is a flat $40, with no extra charge for the certificate. For road test help, the site lists standard appointment booking at $25 (usually 5 to 9 weeks out), rush booking at $75 (usually 1 to 3 weeks out) and a car for the test at $115. Our road test guide shows the steps if you book directly with the DMV, including the extra requirements for drivers under 18.

Age changes the timetable. A learner under 18 must wait at least six months after receiving the permit before the road test and bring the MV-262, the signed record of 50 hours of supervised driving, 15 of them after sunset. For a 16-year-old, then, the class is rarely the longest wait. A learner who fails a test must wait at least 14 days before the next one.

A short checklist before you reserve

  • Do you hold a valid New York learner permit? The DMV requires one before the course.
  • Can you attend one date from start to finish? Ask the site what happens if you need to move to another date.
  • Is English or Spanish the better fit? Pick the class that matches.
  • How will the MV-278 reach you? Ask when the site confirms your reservation, and read our MV-278 guide so you know what to expect.

One more habit helps: write the date in your calendar the day you reserve. If anything about your permit could cause a problem at check-in, such as an expired permit, raise it with the site before class day rather than during it. The DMV requires a valid permit for the course, and identity is confirmed when you enroll and during the class.

If the dates here do not work for your week, Drive Rite Academy NY lists Zoom sessions on most days. Take 5-Hour Course is one of our four Partner providers; the About page explains the label, and our provider directory lines up all thirteen.

What we like

  • $40 flat, with no extra charge for the certificate
  • Several posted dates each week
  • Full Spanish version of the site
  • Borough pages and articles for all five boroughs

Keep in mind

  • Classes run on fixed dates, so a missed date means waiting for the next one
  • Spanish class on select Sundays only
  • Road test booking and the car for the test cost extra

Our verdict

Take 5-Hour Course follows the same format as its two sister booking sites, so the decision comes down to which schedule and site you prefer. Its approach is direct: look at the posted dates, choose the closest one that works, and reserve the seat. The $40 flat price and the certificate issued after the class make the cost easy to predict. Road test booking ($25 standard, $75 rush) and a car for the test ($115) are available if you want them.

Best for: Learners who want to get the class done by picking the nearest open date

Frequently asked questions

Which class date can I join soonest?

That depends on the schedule shown on the site on the day you look. Classes run on Tuesday and Thursday at 5:00 PM and on Saturday at 1:00 PM in English, and on select Sundays at 3:00 PM in Spanish. Pick the nearest date you can attend for the whole class.

Is the class shorter if I register for the nearest date?

No. Every class is a full 5-hour class. Choosing the nearest date only changes when you take it.

Does Take 5-Hour Course teach in Spanish?

Yes. The site has a full Spanish version, and Spanish classes run on select Sundays at 3:00 PM. Our Spanish-language guide lists other providers that teach in Spanish.
