How the online pilot works
Pre-Licensing Course LLC appears on the DMV’s list of online pre-licensing course providers, which the DMV runs as its Internet Pilot Program. In this format the course is automated and self-paced: there is no live class and no instructor teaching in real time, and the DMV requires identity checks throughout.
The conditions come from the DMV, not from the school. You must be 18 or older and hold a valid New York photo learner permit. Applicants for junior licenses (class DJ or MJ) are not eligible. And you have 30 days from registration to finish.
Price and language
When we checked in October 2026, the course page showed a limited-time offer of $38, with a regular price of $49. Offers of this kind change, so check the price shown when you register. Our cost guide compares the online route with the live classes.
The course is available in English and Spanish, which is why this provider appears in our Spanish-language guide. The company is based in Astoria, Queens, though nothing about an online course requires you to be there.
What happens when you finish
- Complete the course within your 30 days.
- The provider reports your completion to the DMV electronically.
- Wait for it to post to your record, which usually takes 24 to 48 hours.
- Book your road test online or by phone.
There is no paper MV-278 in this format, so there is nothing to collect, mail or carry. That is the biggest practical difference from a live class; our MV-278 guide explains why online completers receive no paper certificate. When the record has posted, our road test guide lists what to bring on the day.
Is this format right for you?
A self-paced online course suits some learners and not others.
- It fits if you are 18 or older, hold a photo learner permit and want to choose your own hours within the 30-day window.
- It does not fit if you are 16 or 17, or hold a junior permit. You need a live class, on Zoom or in a classroom, instead.
- Think twice if you learn best by asking a live instructor questions as you go.
For a live class that accepts junior permits, see Coreway. For another online option in English and Spanish, compare NTSI. Pre-Licensing Course LLC is not one of our Partners, and we have no relationship with it; this profile uses its public page and the DMV’s pages.

Our verdict
Pre-Licensing Course LLC is the practical pick for an adult learner whose schedule does not fit a fixed class date. The course is automated, so no live instructor is involved, and the DMV’s rules for online courses apply: 18 or older, a photo permit and 30 days to finish. Offering the course in English and Spanish is a real advantage. Remember that you will not receive a paper certificate, and plan your road test booking around the 24 to 48 hours it takes for completion to post.
Best for: Adults 18+ with a photo permit who want to complete the course online
